I don’t know if any of you have been watching Phenomenon Wednesdays on NBC… It’s kind of Mindfreak meets American Idol… Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Been very hit or miss for me.
The premise behind the show is they started with 10 contestants, each a magician or mentalist, and they each do a performance (a few at a time) in front of a live audience with Criss Angel and Uri Geller as “judges”. The vote ultimately comes down to the home audience, because it’s phone calls that make or break each contestant.
For me it’s been a bit hit or miss. Some of the performances have been too over the top. For example, one of the mentalists stopped his heart and restarted it on live television. Another was bitten by a snake. If the goal is to be entertaining, you can amaze me without beating yourself up. That said however, there have been some interesting performances also.
Another aspect of the show is the “celebrity” helpers that each contestant can use during their performances to help with the act. Raven Simone was on, some Playboy bunnies were on… None of them so far, except for Raven, have seemed to have much of a brain in their heads. The Playboy bunnies were actually the scariest bunch so far and as a guy, they weren’t even all that attractive.
So it’ll be interesting to see how the show does. I liked the film one a few months ago much better, where each filmmaker got to make various short films and compete them against each other for the grand prize of getting to go work for Spielberg.
And though I like Criss Angel’s Mindfreak program (which is only a half hour and is better paced than the live show IMHO), I’m not sure I’m going to continue to watch Phenomenon.
As a final thought… How many people used to watch the Muppet Show? Do you remember a musical number from the show that goes “bum ba, di baba… phenomenon… ba ba di da… phenomenon…” etc.? That’s all I have going through my head when I see the word Phenomenon… Well, that or the Travolta movie from several years ago.
Anyway… Let me know what you think of the show… Will it last? Will it come back?
