CD Review: Mindi Abair’s Stars

Mindi Abair’s Stars Album CoverHi all…

I recently had an opportunity to check out Mindi Abair‘s latest CD — Stars, and thought I’d share my findings… My impression of Mindi Abair’s music over her last few albums has been pretty good. I was an alto sax jazz player in high school and can really enjoy some great jazz/fusion tunes. It’s when she slips into pop music that I quickly get a little bored.

However, what I’ve found is that there’s typically at least one song on each album that I will play over and over again. “Come As You Are” had “New Shoes” and “Stars” is no different. Once I got to “Mojo” on this album, I stopped, hit back on my CD player, and listened again, and again… The song has a groove that got to me. 🙂

Overall, though I have to admit that I grew bored. I’m not much of an “easy listening” guy. I like rock and roll, fusion jazz, and other music with a pulse… Not that the rest of the album seemed dead (it’s not dead, and Mindi is a knockout), but it just didn’t do anything for my tastes.

So I have to give this album overall 2/4 stars. The pop bits didn’t do anything for me, but Mojo got me going. 🙂

This CD was released on May 6, 2008. You can find it at the Concord Music Group‘s site, Amazon, and iTunes.

Take a listen. If you like quiet, contemporary jazz pop, this album is probably for you. Unfortunately my music tendencies don’t go that direction. Check out her website for her other albums.

Until next time… Enjoy some tunes!

  1. Definitely agree. 🙂 Dave Koz, Spyro Gyra, the Rippingtons, The Dave Brubeck Trio… They weren’t exactly good looking but man did (do) they make good music. 🙂
